It can be both disheartening and motivating to find what you believed to be your sure-fire winner popping up on the first page of Google results. Disheartening because someone beat you to it. Motivating because perhaps you are onto something.
If Rembrandt hadn’t painted because others had painted before him, if Shakespeare hadn’t written because words had already been written… If that were the case we’d have but one song. One sculpture. Heck, one shampoo – not dandruff reducing or with conditioner or for split ends or frizzy hair or fine hair or oily hair…just “shampoo” – because shampoo had already been done. Why bother to improve on it or give it a new spin, right? Why, indeed.
If you don’t act on your desires simply because someone before you has acted on theirs, you’re ignoring opportunities to engage your creativity and discover what it is that really motivates you and nurtures your soul. Will you create a better mousetrap and make bazillions of dollars? Maybe. Maybe not. But you’ll be exercising your imagination and ingenuity in your own personal way and doing what you love. Hard to put a price tag on that.
You don’t have to re-invent something. Just make it your something! And remember – there is only one you.
It’s all part of the adventure,
Michael
